1 - These Shovelheads were basically built on the 1965
Panhead lower end.
2 - The cylinders are interchangeable with all later 74"
engines up to early 1978. The heads are interchangeable up to 1980.
3 - The engines have the same bore and stroke as all the 74"
engines from 1941 to 1973.
4 - Shovelhead and Panhead exhaust valves are the same size,
but Shovelhead intakes are larger.
5 - Cams will interchange from 1948 to 1969.
6 - The timing covers from 1965 to 1969 interchange.
7 - The complete primary drive and covers interchange from
1965 to 1969.
1 - These Shovelheads were changed from a generator to an
alternator model.
2 - The pinion shaft is the same as previous years, up to
1972. A new one is used from 1973 through early 1982. One last
change was made for 1982 through 1984.
3 - The 1970 and later pinion gear is missing a timing mark
from previous years.
4 - The pinion gears are the same for 1970 to early 1977,
as well as the cam and breather. Late 1977 to 1980 74" timing
gear, cam, and breather is the same. Don't mix early and late
components.
5 - The 74" engine was made through 1980. However, in 1978,
the cylinders were changed, so that the 74" and 80" could us the
same cylinder. The 80" was just bored out to it's appropriate size.
6 - The 80" was the only available Shovelhead, from 1980 to
1984, with the new Evo 80" engine beginning in 1984, also.
7 - The 1970 to 1972 timing covers will not interchange with
the 1973 and later covers, as these earlier covers have no passage
to feed oil to the rods.
